Pavements and road infrastructure

The research activities in the area of road infrastructure of the GeoSI group is mainly focused on the advanced experimental characterization and the computational modeling of the mechanical response of road materials and pavement structure, as well as topic related to infrastructure management. The faculty members who lead these projects have an extensive experience in the areas of geotechnical transportation, multi-scale and multi-physics characterization of unbound granular and asphalt materials, pavement mechanics and degradation of materials and pavement structures.
To support the experimental research activities, the group has access to top-quality infrastructure, some of which is unique in the world (e.g., hollow cylinder tester for asphalt mixtures, hollow cylinder tester for unbound granular base and subbase materials, accelerated test track, etc.).

Research subareas

Characterization of the effects of climate on the mechanical response of road materials and pavement structures. 

 

Evaluation of sustainable practices in the production and use of asphalt materials as part of road projects. 

 

Advanced characterization and development of models for the mechanical characterization of asphalt materials, unbound granular materials and subgrade soils. Characterization of degradation processes of pavement materials and structures (fatigue, rutting, degradation due to coupled climate-mechanical processes etc.).

Quantification and analysis of the uncertainty and optimization modeling in the mechanical response of road materials, pavement design and infrastructure projects. These studies are performed through numerical modeling and computational mechanics. 

 

Development of new laboratory devices to support fundamental and applied research in the area of road infrastructure. 

 

Evaluation of the response of geotechnical structures of road infrastructure projects through physical modeling (e.g., geotechnical centrifugre) and numerical.
